Edamame

Edamame is an amazing ingredient! First of all it is super flavorful and incredibly fun to eat. But edamame is also very healthy! Edamame is rich in vitamins and minerals including calcium, iron, vitamin C and fiber. It’s also high in protein. Edamame may also help lower cholesterol, promote healthy blood sugar regulation, and reduce the risk of certain cancer. Need I say more?

How to cook frozen edamame

You can of course purchase fresh edamame if available, but frozen edamame is fantastic as well and due to availability, my go-to.

Cooking edamame is very simple! Place edamame in a steaming basket and steam over a pot of boiling water for 5-10 minutes. Time will vary depending on how crisp or soft you would like your edamame.

And that’s it folk! Simple steamed edamame. Now you can just top them off with a touch of sea salt and enjoy. But today we are taking it to the next level with a deliciously thick, sweet, savory garlic soy sauce! Trust me, it’s worth the extra step.

Where to buy edamame

You can find edamame in the frozen section of most basic grocery stores. Sometimes you can find it fresh in the produce section. You can also find edamame in an Asian grocery store.

Garlic Soy Sauce

As mentioned above, this garlic soy sauce is thick, sweet, savory and loaded with flavor! For this garlic soy sauce you will simply combine sake, rice vinegar, soy sauce, ketchup, sugar, garlic and ginger in a pan. This combination will cook down for about 10 minutes to bring out all of the flavors. Then you will add cornstarch to thicken the sauce and a touch of toasted sesame oil. This garlic soy sauce is full of flavor and has many notes! It’s savory, sweet, tangy, and full of that umami flavor that we all love.

Make it spicy

Want to turn this into a spicy garlic edamame recipe? No problem! Just add Chili flakes, sriracha, or garlic chili oil to the sauce to bring up the heat.

Sugar and Salt

For the garlic soy sauce I sweetened the deal with a bit of brown sugar. You can adjust sweetness level to taste if desired. You can also substitute brown sugar for regular sugar, maple syrup, agave, or stevia.

To lower the salt of the recipe, just use low sodium soy sauce.

How to serve edamame with garlic soy sauce

This easy to make edamame recipe makes the perfect snack or side dish! Serve it alongside any Asian inspired meal. I personally love to serve this edamame along side dumplings or sushi.

You can also turn this recipe into a healthy, light meal by using shelled edamame instead of edamame pods and serving it over rice!
