How to make white beans taste like deviled eggs (without adding egg)
Yes! This vegan deviled egg dip is pretty much an eggless, white bean hummus that tastes like deviled eggs! How do you achieve that deviled egg flavor without eggs and mayo? The trick is simply a clever blend of seasoning!
To make this eggless, vegan deviled egg dip taste like traditional deviled eggs you combine white beans, black salt, smoked paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, turmeric (for color), black pepper, whole grain mustard, nutritional yeast, horseradish, and apple cider vinegar. A bit of a list, but most of us have these ingredients on hand.
The two most important ingredients of this list for achieving that egg-like flavor are black salt and nutritional yeast.
What is Black Salt
Black salt is also known as Kala Namak. It is a volcanic rock salt produced in the Himalayan region. And in this particular instance, is the ingredient that really helps make your vegan deviled egg dip actually taste a lot like egg!
Black salt has been used for thousands of years for its medicinal benefits. It is highly regarded in Ayurveda, the Indian alternative medics system. They have used to black salt to heal many conditions including dental problems, anemia, digestive disorders.
Black salt is an amazing addition to your spice cabinet. With its pungent, egg-like flavor it is a significant player in brining any vegan “egg” dish to the next level. You can easy find it online or at an Indian Market.
WHAT IS NUTRITIONAL YEAST
If you are pondering where to find nutritional yeast in the grocery store, you may also be wondering what nutritional yeast even is!
Nutritional yeast, also known as nooch, is basically nature’s vegan cheese powder! Nutritional yeast is yeast made from living saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast, which is the same yeast used to make bread. Nutritional yeast is a powdery, with large flakes and has a mustard-like color.
Nutritional yeast has a unique, cheese-like flavor that can be described as savory and slightly nutty. This delicious, flavor boosting ingredient is very popular in vegan and dairy free cheese recipes and is often the key ingredient to create a dairy free, cheese-like flavor.
Nutritional yeast can be found in most major grocery stores. You will usually find it in the baking isle or the health food section of the grocery store.
Adding Pickle Chips to Vegan Deviled Egg Dip
This vegan deviled egg dip is low fat and oil free…except for the pickle chips. If you are really watching your oil and fat intake, just skip them. But if you have some wiggle from for a little indulgence, there are only 2 tbsp of chip crumbles for the recipe and they add a lot of fun flavor to this white bean dip!
Topping for vegan deviled egg dip
This vegan deviled egg dip recipe is super flavorful with just the white bean hummus…but the toppings really help make this dip a winner! As mentioned above, adding crumbed dill pickle chips really adds a lot of unique flavor to this dip. I recommend adding fresh dill, sliced olives, and everything bagel seasoning as well!
